Tremec devises a manual transmission for the mid-engined Corvette

Tremec, a familiar name for anyone who has ever taken interest in aftermarket transmissions, has announced the coming of a new manual gearbox for the Chevrolet C8 Corvette. Armed with six forward gears, it is rated to withstand some impressive loads.

Specifically, the still-unnamed Tremec box can take up to 1,014 PS (1,000 hp / 747 kW) and up to 1,085 Nm (800 lb-ft) of torque. It works with engines revving up to 8,600 RPM and is supposed to be mounted on the OEM mounting points, simplifying installation. Owners will still need to find a way to squeeze a third pedal into their car and add a lever on the tunnel, so it will primarily be sold to experienced tuning shops.

There are no prices or release date estimates yet. What we do know is that the new gearbox is being developed as a complete replacement for the TR-9080 DCT, so it should also fit the Ford Mustang GTD with some fine-tuning. The company speculates that it should work in other cars with the engine either at the front or between the axles and the drive on the rear axle.

Potential buyers are also advised that performance may change after replacing a modern automatic transmission with a manual one. Those looking for the fastest possible acceleration off the line will probably be better off sticking to automatic, whereas those who want to feel completely in control of their ride on the track are the primary target audience.
