Ford may be already designing an all-electric crossover SUV with Mustang-like body styling, but London-based manufacturer Charge Cars promises to bring battery-powered Mustang lookalikes to the market much sooner than Ford does. The young company openly admits that it is its first project, but emphasizes that its engineering department includes experts previously employed in the Williams F1 team, Jaguar Land Rover, and McLaren.
Looking at the photos, you may think that the British startup simply stole the design of the original 1967 Ford Mustang. In reality, though, the company acquired all the necessary licenses and will be using genuine Mustang body parts on official terms. Furthermore, while the looks are the same, the tech is completely different.
The new EV, which is still to get a name from its creators, comes powered by four electric motors jointly rated at 476 horsepower (355 kilowatts) and 1,200 Newton-meters (885 pound-feet) of torque. Maximum torque at the wheels may briefly surge to 7,500 Nm (5,532 lb×ft) when necessary. Accelerating from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes four seconds, and the top going speed is artificially limited at 240 km/h (150 mph). Once fully charged, the 64 kWh battery offers 322 kilometers (200 miles) of range.
The vehicle will make its first live appearance at the upcoming 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Charge Cars is already processing pre-orders and promises to begin shipping in September. The production quantity is limited to 499 cars priced at £300,000 each.
