RTR Vehicles ramps up the power on an EcoBoost V4 Ford Mustang

Those in the market for an affordable Ford Mustang EcoBoost 2.3 may now the “affordable” part out of the window by opting for a tuning upgrade just announced by RTR Vehicles. It doesn’t help with the power output, but tweaks steering and suspension for a “different driving character.” Some aesthetic touches made it into the mix, too.

Starting with the engine, the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mill still pumps out its standard 319 PS (315 hp / 235 kW) using a 10-speed automatic transmission. RTR retrofits it with a system preventing turbo lag, which it claims helps a lot with the throttle response in all scenarios.

Stiffer sway bars, silent blocks and a different rear subframe, as well as tuned MagneRide shocks result in sharper steering and more confident cornering, per the tuner. The steering mechanism has been revised to allow for greater wheel turn angles, and the brake system has been upgraded with the Brembo brakes of the latest Mustang GT. Rounding off the list of modifications are assorted weight reduction measures resulting in a superior per-axle weight distribution ratio.

On the outside, the RTR Mustang boasts 19-inch forged wheels, a rear spoiler, a new radiator grille and assorted decals. It has illuminated side sills and lime-colored safety belts inside, along with matching stitching. The brake calipers are also lime.

While an EcoBoost Mustang like this one may tempt some buyers, it’s worth pointing out that RTR Vehicles launched a tuning program for the V8 version of the muscle car in September. It was called Spec 5 and involved a supercharger kit taking the engine to a cool 882 PS (870 hp / 649 kW) – more than the stock Mustang Dark Horse at a lower price point.
