GMC reveals Hummer EV specs, prices and availability dates

After nearly a decade in obscurity, the iconic auto marque Hummer makes a spectacular comeback under the General Motors banner. The name, the badass style and the impressive off-road chops are still there, even though the drivetrain is nothing like before.

Built on a unibody platform, the new Hummer is a pickup truck armed with per-wheel suspension and a massive 24-cell Ultium battery co-designed with LG Chem (capacity undisclosed). It has four doors and seat for five people by default. The roof is a removable hardtop that you can detach part by part and store away in the frunk. The rear window can be lowered, and the tailgate supports six different positions for versatility and convenience.

The cabin is square-ish in shape and houses two displays: a 12.3-inch digital dashboard and a touch-enabled multimedia display 13.4 inches across. The feature list mentions leather upholstery, power adjustments, an audio system and much more.

The generous approach angle of the truck enables it to climb vertical steps up to 46 centimeters (18 inches) tall. The tires are Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT and come in 35 and 37 inch variants. Optional air-ride suspension enables ride height adjustment with 149 millimeters (roughly 6 inches), and the car can wade water up to 600 mm tall (around two feet). Four-wheel steering enhances off-road performance, while the aptly named Crab Mode enables the car to go sideways.

The range-topping GMC Hummer EV Edition One will be the first to hit the market next fall priced from U.S. $113,000. It will have three electric motors (one front, two rear) and pack 1,014 PS (1,000 hp / 745 kW). The cumulative torque at the wheels will reportedly amount to 15,590 Nm (11,500 lb-ft), enabling a sprint from zero to 60 miles per hour (0-97 km/h) in three seconds flat. Once fully charged, the truck will have around 560 kilometers (348 miles) of range, and charging at an 800V / 350kW station for just ten minutes will grant you another 162 km (100 miles).

Another modification called the EX3X will follow in the fall of 2022. Priced from $100,000, it will have 811 PS (800 hp / 596 kW), 12,880 Nm (9,500 lb-ft) of torque and 483 km (300 miles of range). A dual-engined EV2X will join the lineup in the spring of 2023 with 634 PS (625 hp / 466 kW), 10,033 Nm (7,400 lb-ft) and the same range as above. The final and most affordable spec – EV2 – will only arrive in the spring of 2024 packing the same power, but only around 400 kilometers (250 miles) of range. It will also get spring-based suspension, no 4WS and a cheaper 400V charger port. It will offset that with the $80,000 starting price.
