Replacing the battery in a used McLaren P1 costs almost $160k

A McLaren P1, one out of 375 hybrid supercars made in the early 2010s, has recently gone on sale and reached a top bid of $1,351,000. While that’s a lot of money, the owner will likely have to splurge on a new battery as well, which costs like a new Porsche 911 AWD Cabriolet.

The example on sale was made in 2014 and has since traveled roughly 7,500 km (4,660 miles). Like the rest of the P1 bunch, it came equipped with a part-electric powertrain. A few years ago, McLaren launched a service campaign offering to replace the stock battery with a lighter next-generation one. The new battery pack cost $156,700 in the USA and required an advance payment of $35,700.

The owner of the car seen here ordered that battery pack and paid the deposit. However, according to the listing, the battery still installed in the car still had 92% of its capacity remaining thanks to low mileage. In the end, he couldn’t decide whether to finalize the purchase or not. If the new oner of the car chooses to do so, they will have to pay the rest of the amount.

The McLaren P1 utilizes a 3.8-liter turbocharged V8 in tandem with an electric motor to drive the wheels with 916 PS (903 hp / 674 kW). It can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.8 seconds and ultimately reach 350 km/h (217 mph). It does have an all-electric drive mode, but it’s rather limited with different sources reporting between 11 and 31 km (6.8–19.3 miles) of range before the battery runs out.
