Mercedes-AMG SL hits the test track almost naked

Investing into a new ICE-powered convertible is a risky affair, especially if you consider the growing popularity of SUVs and electric cars. Mercedes still stays in the segment, but does so in a smart way: the SLC is no more, and the AMG GT and SL models become one.

The next-generation SL has recently been sighted cruising along public roads with only minimal disguise on. It looks the manufacturer has reverted the formula to soft-top to minimize weight and improve usability. The vehicle with a red top had a large license plate mounted on the rear window – perhaps because it was a U.S. specification with only a tiny niche for the plate.

The rear end can hardly be seen under all the camo, but the dual tailpipes suggest it’s the SL spec. Other noteworthy details include a Panamericana grille, slide-out door handles, and a rear spoiler.

It is official that only the entry-level AMG SL will ship with a rear-wheel-drive system, whereas all the others will be AWD. Rumor has it that an SL 73 spec will reside at the top with a plug-in hybrid powertrain capable of 800 PS (789 hp / 588 kW).
