Mercedes-Benz shares the first G-Class Cabrio pics

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class lineup will soon be joined by a convertible version, which is presently running pre-production tests in the winter colds of Austria. In the meantime, the company wants us to take a look at its photos.

Despite the camo, the G-Wagen looks almost indistinguishable from its standard counterpart. The soft top appears foldable, but it is unclear how exactly it is supposed to be folded down, where to and to what extend the process is automated. An important detail that might slip your grasp is that Mercedes is currently testing the Cabrio in rather bad weather, trying to ensure “adequate performance and reliability.” This essentially means that the off-roader will remain functional through most of winter, unlike many other droptops. That’s good news for the G-Class enthusiasts who don’t have enough space for another garage queen.

On the tech front, “an unparalleled experience” is the only thing the company promises us at the moment. We suspect the Cabrio is largely identical to the main G-Class in terms of drivetrain and suspension.

Last but not least, Mercedes refers to this new version as a “special edition”, making it sound like a limited-availability item. We should learn more in the coming weeks.
