Kia has unveiled the Clavis, an all-electric version of its Carens SUV for India. It starts from 17.99 Rs Lakh and is expected to make a debut in other countries as well, but later.
Back when Kia introduced the gas-powered Karens lineup, it neglected to mention that an EV was coming soon. This caused many rumors, because the car looked distinctly like the Korean marque’s other EVs. The company has now admitted that it was a deliberate PR move. The Carens Clavis has the exact same body dimensions as its ICE counterpart and is a seven-seater, just like any other crossover in this market segment in India.
In its most affordable form, the Clavis gets a single motor rated at 135 PS (133 hp / 99 kW) and 225 Nm (166 lb-ft) of torque. It also makes do with a rather modest 42-kWh battery pack rated at 404 km (251 miles) of range.
Paying extra for the top spec gets you a superior e-motor with 171 PS (169 hp / 126 kW) and 255 Nm (188 lb-ft) of torque. This version of the car also comes bundled with a larger 51.4-kWh battery and has up to 490 km (304.5 miles) of range. Charging is possible from all sources rated up to 100 kW, and you can use the car to power external appliances when needed.
Trim options include a 26.6-inch dual dash display, ventilated front seats, a Bose audio system, a panoramic sunroof and up to 20 electronic assists. All production will be localized in India.
