Subaru’s large SUV EV set to premiere on April 1st

The Japanese automaker will unveil its biggest all-electric crossover on April 1, just ahead of the New York International Auto Show opening. The model is advertised as “all-new”, but there’s no mistaking the outlines of the Toyota Highlander on the only teaser pic released thus far.

Although the image is rather dark, you can still discern the body lines, wheel arches and roof of the Highlander. It looks like the SUV has a Subaru front end with stacked headlights, backlit badge and other cosmetics, but little else that’s original.

The interior remains to be shown, but major changes are unlikely there as well. We look forward to seeing three seat rows, a 12.3-inch digital dashboard and a 14-inch head unit.

Intriguingly enough, Subaru has already revealed one drivetrain specification that doesn’t support our Highlander theory. Specifically, the company claims the dual-motor version of the SUV will be making 420 PS (414 hp / 309 kW). In comparison, the Highlander tops out at just 338 PS (333 hp / 249 kW). It also gets 515 km (320 miles) of range per charge. We’ll probably have to wait until the premiere to learn more.
