Tank 700 spawns an 863-horsepower version for China

Great Wall Motor Company has introduced a new version of its Tank 700 body-on-frame off-roader at the Auto China show in Beijing last weekend. Dubbed the Hi4-Z, it packs 863 PS (851 hp / 635 kW) along with some exterior and interior improvements.

The powertrain comprises a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and two e-motors linked to a 56-kWh battery pack. All-electric range maxes out at 190 kilometers (118 miles), and GWM claims that switching to hybrid mode gets you an impressive fuel economy of 1.16 liters per 100 kilometers. That’s nearly 203 miles per U.S. gallon and 243 mpg in UK gallons. It’s also a relatively fast off-roading machine with a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint time of 5.6 seconds.

On the outside, the Tank 700 Hi4-Z measures 5,105 mm (201 inches) long with 3,000 mm (117.2 inches) between the axles. Compared to the other versions, the flagship can be recognized by its added roof wing and a diffuser-like bumper attachment at the rear end.

Interior novelty seems to boil down to a revised transmission tunnel and a selector now styled as a steering wheel stalk. Sales in China should start soon, and there’s been no mention of when the SUV may get an exports version.
