Cheaper, stripped-down Tesla Model Y spotted in China

Chinese spy photographer Garage42 claims that these images show Tesla’s new affordable EV, reports CarNewsChina. Elon Musk had said before that it would be based on the Model Y chassis, and the photos seem to prove it.

The exterior of the car is draped over, but you can still notice that there is no LED DRL strip spanning the entire width of the front bumper. The taillights also look much simpler, and these is no panoramic roof in sight. Cost-cutting measures are even more apparent in the cabin, which lacks a rear passenger screen of any kind and houses a rather basic-looking steering wheel. The paddle shifters seem to stay the same, though, as does the touchscreen in the middle. The armrest between the seats appears different, too.

One thing that’s certain is that Tesla will want to slash the production costs as much as it can in order to stay competitive. This is especially relevant in China where the market is already flooded with cheap EVs and competition worsens with each passing day. CarNewsChina speculates that sales of this wallet-friendly Model Y derivative may start in the final quarter of the year.
