Zero-emission vehicle sales in the EU hit an all-time high

For the first time on record, all-electric vehicle sales in Europe have surpassed those of traditional ICE cars, ACEA reports.

The record was set in December 2025 compared to the same month of 2024. The total sales volume in the EU nearly hit a million units in the same month, roughly 67% of them being electrified or all-electric. That’s a 9.2-percent improvement in EV adoption compared to 2024.

Chinese brands led the trend once again. BYD was the undisputed leader with a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 229.7%. Volkswagen did reasonably well with +10.2%, and Stellantis managed to pull off a positive 4.5%. On the other hand, Renault lost 2.2% of its EV sales volume compared to the previous year, and Tesla continued its rapid downfall with a negative 20.2% YoY.

Overall vehicle sales in the EU have grown by 1.8%. Speaking about the challenges of the local EV sector, ACEA pointed out increasing pressure from China, U.S. tariffs messing up the market and difficulties of technological and infrastructural nature. Despite these setbacks, Europe appears resolved to go all-electric in the future, even if it cannot do so by the year 2035 as previously hoped.
