The second generation of the Tesla Roadster had a brief debut in 2017 before vanishing from the public sight. Many years and production delays later, Tesla’s engineering executive Lars Moravy says it is still very much alive and even gets cool new features.
According to Motor1.com quoting Moravy, these new technological gimmicks will be properly introduced to us before the end of the year. This seems to be supported by a statement made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk several weeks ago. He promised a “most epic demo ever” without going into detail, leaving us to guess whether it had anything to do with the Roadster or not.
Moravy didn’t reveal any new numbers or other specifics, but went as far as to claim that the Roadster would be the “last best driver’s car”. Apparently, he meant to say that a self-driving vehicle era was looming upon us and the lightning-fast EV would become one of the final driver-focused vehicles on sale. That’s… debatable, to say the least.
During the initial announcement, the Roadster was introduced with a 0-96.6 km/h (0-60 mph) sprint time of 1.9 seconds and nearly 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) of range per charge. It is possible that Tesla used the past eight years to improve some numbers, although we’d be surprised if it even managed to match the ambitious original figures. If you are feeling optimistic, you may leave a $50,000 deposit as a part of your preorder.
Commenting on the announcement, Motor1 concluded that it didn’t come at the best possible time. With the tariff war in full swing and EV market in a continuing slump, investing money in a mass-produced, highly profitable product makes more sense than releasing an exotic EV destined to forever remain a niche product for the lucky few.
Our own sentiments are similar, but it’ll still be interesting to look at the Roadster Mk2 when it finally arrives (and we hope it does).
