Not a Laughing Matter: Tesla misses April 1st Roadster reveal deadline

As some of you may remember, Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised last fall to reveal a production-ready version of the second-generation Tesla Roadster on April 1, 2026. In a shocking twist of events, the company has seemingly fumbled the deadline – all over again.

Since Tesla Motor Company still has no marketing or PR division to speak of, all communication has to occur via Elon Musk himself. In an X/Twitter post from two days ago, a user reminded Musk about Tesla’s birthday date: March 17, 2008. It was the date the production of the first-generation Roadster EV started.

Musk retweeted the post, adding: “True. New Roadster unveil is probably in late April.” In other words, it looks like we won’t be seeing the supercar on April 1st, and possibly in April, period. The wait must be getting to all those influencers and diehard brand fans who chose to preorder their Roadster back in 2017 when it was just announced. The original idea was to begin customer deliveries in 2020, but it’s 2026 out there and still no production car.

Naturally, news like this wouldn’t be complete without a sarcastic remark or two from Internet users. Our favorite is a commenter from Carscoops who argued that Tesla should postpone the reveal by a whole year now – if only because the International Fools’ Day is the only proper date for the second-gen Roadster to appear on. Nine years in the making, it’s long become an egregious example of broken promises and undelivered expectations.
