Toyota’s pickup becomes a dump truck in Southeastern Asia

Thailand-based auto shop RRS has devised a program to turn the latest generation of the Toyota Hilux into a dump truck rated for five metric tons (~11,000 lbs) of cargo. That’s impressive and just a tad suspicious for a vehicle that receives suspension and axle reinforcements, but no new frame or engine.

To be specific, the tuner installs a heavy-duty rear beam, matching rear springs and high-end shock absorbers. The frame stays unmodded, as does the truck’s standard 2.0-liter diesel engine rated at 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque.

The dimensions of the new truck bed default to 2,500 x 1,760 x 600 millimeters (98.4 x 69.3 x 23.6 inches), but you can opt for taller sidewalls if necessary. The tipping mechanism can be powered either by the pickup’s own diesel or a separately installed electric motor. Those who need extra flexibility for loading and unloading may opt for a 1-tonne (2,200-lb) power-assisted crane in the back.

RRS emphasizes that the Hilux retains its rear parking sensor and reversing camera functionality intact. The mechanics working on it dismantle the sensors as needed, move them to a new position, and rewire everything in such a way as to convince the pickup that it hasn’t been modified in the first place.

One possible point of concern is that the local Hilux “Travo” spec – which provides the starting point for the conversion – only has a manufacturer-rated carrying capacity slightly above one metric ton (2,200 lbs). One has to wonder if the reinforcements introduced by RRS are truly enough to exceed that rating almost by a factor of five.
