Volkswagen Golf R sets new Nürburgring record

A limited-edition Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years piloted by Benny Leichter has completed the entire 20,832 meters of the North Loop in 7:47.31, becoming the company’s fastest R vehicle on the formidable racing course.

The result is comparable with those of the 2007 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, the 2006 Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 and the 2004 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The original latest-gen Golf R was only four seconds slower, by the way.

While the car is now officially recognized as the fastest Volkswagen R on the ‘Ring, it is not the fastest Golf there. Back in 2016, a Golf GTI Clubsport S came 0.12 seconds ahead.

The 20 Years Edition is 13 horsepower more powerful than the original it is based upon, hitting the wheels with 333 PS (328 hp / 245 kW). It is comparable to the standard Golf R in terms of dynamic performance, sprinting 0-100 km/h in the same 4.7 seconds and maxing out at 270 km/h (167.8 mph) with the appropriate option pack installed.
