Audi vows to ditch the confusing two-digit naming scheme

The Ingolstadt automaker plans to gradually phase out all cars using alphanumeric indexes in the name to denote a powertrain.

The new nomenclature appeared in 2017 and was supposed to let buyers know what kind of powertrain to expect from a car. In reality, though, it was far from perfect and confusing at best. For instance, the same 2.0-liter turbocharged engine could be referred to as “40 TFSI” or “45 TFSI” depending on the boost amount, but the numbers weren’t indicative of anything.

As a result, the company had to admit that the customers were confused by this new naming scheme. As it actively embraces all-electric transports, Audi plans to leave these two-digit designations in the past and make comparisons between the different versions simpler for the clientele.
