Posaidon lands G-Wagen with supercar levels of horsepower

Remember the olden days, when people still preferred to drive their Mercedes G-Class vehicles away from trodden paths, rather than turning them into questionable track tools with all the agility of an elephant and all the aerodynamics of a brick? Times surely have changed. Meet Posaidon Mercedes-AMG G63, a G-Wagen that might just outrun an AMG GT R.

The German tuner found issue with the SUV’s stock four-liter V8 only churning out some meager 585 PS (430 kW) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque. They fitted it with stronger turbochargers, a performance exhaust system and lots of other aftermarket components. Most importantly, they put a water/methanol injection system in the trunk for that extra dose of power.

As a result, the powertrain now generates insane 940 PS (691 kW) and up to 1,278 Nm (943 lb-ft) of torque. Thanks to a firmware update, the G-Class now needs 3.6 seconds to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill – just like the AMG GT R, which is a range-topping production supercar and not a heavy metal crate on wheels. It also doesn’t max out until 280 km/h (174 mph) in a straight line.

The body kit stays stock – perhaps because modding it would have been a thankless affair, anyway – but Posaidon upgrades the brakes to carbon-ceramic and the hood to a ventilated model that hopefully ensures adequate cooling for the fiery monster engine underneath.
