57-year-old sports car exotic hits $1M, owner refuses

The Italian-made Bizzarrini 5300 GT America may be one of just 10 or so units in existence, but turning down $1,025,000 for it on Bring a Trailer strikes us as odd.

Back in 1968, legendary car designer Giotto Bizzarrini teamed up with engineer Renzo Rivolta to produce a track-focused grand tourer called the Bizzarrini 5300 GT Corsa. It featured a GFRP body and an innovative suspension setup on the rear axle. At the same time, the company produced a street-legal version of the same car, called Strada. Only 133 units were made in total.

Later on, the GT 3500 made it to the United States in a special edition called America. It combined the traits of the track-only and the road-going modifications for Europe and came equipped with a 5.3-liter Chevrolet V8 rated at 370 PS (365 hp / 272 kW). The transmission was four-speed manual. Reports say only 10 units or so were made available in the US.

The example pictured here has a rather transparent background with regular maintenance, multiple documented restorations and not too many owners to show for being 57 years old. It is also fairly lightly used with 13,500 km (~8,400 miles) on the odometer.

In the meantime, someone revived the Bizzarrini brand in 2023 and announced its first modern supercar: the Giotto. It’s possible that the seller of this vintage GT wanted to hold onto it and sell it for more when the hype was once again high around the Italian marque. It’s just a little bit concerning that we haven’t heard anything about this Giotto supercar since its announcement.
