BMW unveils an armored 7-Series lineup

BMW has presented new armored vehicles from its Protection range: the V8-powered 7-Series and its electric counterpart, the i7. The latter is allegedly the world’s first armored production EV, but it comes with a big performance tradeoff.

All cars are protected to the VR9 standard, which renders them immune to most gunfire and explosives, as well as grenades and aerial drone bomber runs.

The base specification includes an autonomous air supply system, a fire extinguisher with a manual/auto switch, and an intercom for communicating with the driver.

On the outside, the plated 7-Series rides on robust 20-inch wheels shod in special Michelin PAX Run-Flat tires. It can also be equipped with strobe lights and flag holders if necessary.

Inside, a 28-channel Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround audio system delivers a top-notch listening experience while the doors and the sun screens all around are power-assisted. The list of options mentions an additional rearview mirror displaying rear camera footage and a fridge between the rear seats.

The BMW i7 Protection utilizes two electric motors that propel it with 544 PS (536 hp / 400 kW) and 745 Nm (549 lb-ft) of torque. Due to the sheer bulk and weight, it takes full 9 seconds to launch from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph). The range is unknown, but is guaranteed to be worse than that of the standard EV.

As for the gas-powered BMW 7 Protection, it uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with a mild hybrid add-on to generate a combined 523 PS (516 hp / 385 kW). It is enough for a 6.6-second sprint time and a 210 km/h (130 mph) top speed.

The production will start in Dingolfing, Germany next month, with the first deliveries scheduled for December.
