BMW’s firstborn crossover SUV running on the company’s innovative Neue Klasse platform for electric cars has been spotted testing on public roads in Germany, Motor1 reports posting a handful of photos. The car could be released in the summer of 2025 to replace the current BMW iX3, the publication believes.
The photographer who made these shots says the car was comparable with the X3 in terms of size, but looked entirely different. For one thing, it had an all-new front end resembling that of the recently introduced Neue Klasse Concept (see video). It also had rather unusual c-pillar outlines.
Since the model is still very much a work in progress, it is likely that the production car will end up looking like something else altogether. Note also that at this early stage of development, BMW may use fake bodywork to conceal the actual appearance of the prototype.
A larger wheelbase suggests that the EV may have more interior space than the X3. In all likelihood, it will go on sale with multiple RWD and AWD powertrain choices, as well as more than one battery size. Rumor has it that BMW is targeting ‘up to 580 km’ (360 miles) for range.
