This unique 1979 BMW M1 will be auctioned off next month expected to fetch up to 550,000 USD. The company produced only 10 such cars in a spec called AHG Studie (see video), and this particular example had belonged to late Fast&Furious star Paul Walker until 2014.
The model was designed to participate in the FIA Group 5. BMW teamed up with Lamborghini at first, but the partnership fell through later. Now, the M1 is considered the world’s first mid-engined BMW and the first vehicle produced by the BMW M division independently from the main company.
To promote the M1, the company launched its own racing series called Procar, a support race of sorts for the Formula 1. Only specially prepped vehicles could participate, including sufficiently modified road-legal cars. Once the production was complete, AHG released its own tuning kit for the model.
On the outside, the M1 boasts a number of design cues borrowed from racecars. Its AHG Studie package includes improved suspension parts, upgraded cabin and a six-cylinder engine boosted from 277 to 350 metric hp. Buyers could opt for a unique exterior finish if they wanted to. It is believed that only 10 cars like this were made.
AHG got its hands on this particular M1 in 1980. Paul Walker added it to his collection in the early 2010s, and the car was auctioned off shortly after the actor’s death in a road accident in 2014.
The last time the coupe went on sale was in January 2021, when it had 6,800 km (4,225 miles) on the odo. It fetched $500,000. The current mileage is reported as 6,821 km (4,238 miles).
