BMW has no plans to produce another generation of the gas-powered X3 M, BMW Blog reports citing insider reports. The standard X3 range may continue to run on fossil fuel, but the M lineup will be fully electric.
According to these unconfirmed reports, the Bavarian automaker plans to use different platforms to produce the standard X3 and the M version. The latter will most likely be based on Neue Klasse, the company’s latest-and-greatest EV architecture that’s still in development.
Asked about availability, the source allegedly replied that for a while, customers would be able to choose freely between a gas-powered X3, a hybrid and an EV, as they would be sold side-by-side.
It remains to be seen how much of this is accurate, of course. BMW Blog believes that the all-electric X3 M will pack 510 PS (503 hp / 375 kW) in its most basic version.
