Czech-made extreme off-road bus now available as a high-end camper

Around seven years ago, Czechia-based automaker Torsus revealed the Praetorian, a hardcore bus riding on a MAN 4x4 truck chassis co-developed with Dämmler in Germany. It was originally billed as a school bus for sparsely populated regions with poor roads (see video), but other variants were released later as well. One of the more recent highlights is an RV called the Torsus Liberra.

While technically a home on wheels, it actually feels rather like an apartment – and costs like one, too. It has ceilings 2.2 meters (7.22 feet) high and contains nearly every commodity you may need in your escape from civilization. There’s a kitchen, a dining area, a bedroom and a shower cabin with a WC. Cooking is made easy thanks to a four-burner stove, a sink, a large tabletop and a spacious fridge. The bedroom houses two separate adult-sized beds that you can push together or pull apart as desired. Air conditioning, warm floors and 250 liters of fresh water storage are included as standard.

A six-cylinder turbo diesel sourced from the MAN 4x4 truck mentioned above drives the wheels. It extracts 290 PS (286 hp / 213 kW) and 1,150 Nm (848 lb-ft) of torque out of its 6.9 liters of displacement and is linked to a 12-speed AT.

As one would expect, such impressive specs come at a price. In the case of the Torsus Liberra, the least you can expect to pay before options is €580,000, or U.S. $675,000.
