Ferrari 296 GT3 scale replica goes on sale priced like a real car

Amalgam, a renowned manufacturer of painstakingly detailed automotive replicas, has unveiled its latest Ferrari project: a 1:8 rendition of the iconic 296 GT3 racer. Only 199 units will be made and sold from $18,090 – you can buy a new Nissan Versa for that kind of money in the USA.

A single look at the sheer sophistication of the replica should be enough to justify the price. It wears a complete aerodynamic kit including canards and a rear wing, an authentic paint job, and Pirelli P Zero tires. The interior in particular looks nearly undistinguishable from the original Ferrari, down to the protective meshes and the steering wheel. Perhaps the only thing that’s lacking is the engine: the engine lid is a solid mold with the rest of the body, so taking a sneak peek at the engine is not an option.

The scale model is 560 mm (21.9 inches) long and was designed based on the original 296 GT3 blueprints, Amalgam claims. The design took a whopping 3,000 hours to finalize, and even so, every example takes roughly 300 hours to build by hand. The professionals working on these replicas finish them in Ferrari’s traditional colors by default, but customers can ask for custom hues.
