Electric Ford Mustang dragster sets a world record

The battery-powered Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 has smashed through another world record in quarter-mile drag racing.

The driver managed to complete the 402-meter strip in 7.759 seconds, accelerating to 289.91 km/h (180.1 mph) towards the finish line and setting a new best time in the prototype racer category.

The number “1800” in the name may be an indication of the power – 1,800 U.S. horsepower, or 1,342 kilowatts. The new car easily dethroned the last year’s champion, the Cobra Jet 1400, not just thanks to the added electric thrust but also because its battery pack was 40 percent lighter.

Three years ago, the Cobra Jet 1400 set the previous record in the same discipline by completing a run in 8.128 seconds and reaching 276.76 km/h (172 mph) towards the end.
