France threatens to cancel subsidies on imported Chinese EVs

The authorities of France intend to review the country’s current legal position towards China-made electric cars brought into Europe. According to Carscoops, the current system lets buyers enjoy €5,000 discounts while buying EVs not even made in France to begin with. That said, the offer in the Old World countries may still be not up to par.

The proposed action is to modify the legislation to account for the power spent on production. Since factories in China commonly burn coal to get their electricity, their products may be considered far less eco-friendly. With that in mind, officials are openly stating that the real goal of the initiative is to make sure that the €1,000,000,000 annually allocated from the state budget on EV subsidies doesn’t go to China.

In the current state of things, all electric vehicles priced under €25,000 in France are eligible for the discount.
