GAC Emkoo gets renamed to GS4 Max for the domestic market

Chinese automaker GAC has published the first photos and specifications of the next-generation Trumpchi GS4 SUV. Apparently, it will be based on the same platform as the Emkoo (see video), but will be much cheaper with some dialed-down styling. It will be called the Trumpchi GS4 Max.

Like the Emkoo, the new model has stamped sides, original c-pillars, large rear spoilers and similar dimensions. The wheelbase is identical at 2,750 mm (107.4 inches), and the bodywork is otherwise the same as the old GS4 if you don’t count the body kit and trim.

The front fascia sports new radiator grille, headlights and bumper. The rear end lacks a diffuser or even an imitation thereof and has no color insert in the spoiler. The taillights are linked with a red LED strip.

Similarities extend into the cabin, too, which has the same steering wheel, dashboard, displays (including a 14.6-inch head unit) and door panels. To differentiate itself from the Emkoo, the GS4 Max gets restyled climate vents and a classic gear selector.

Only one powertrain has been announced so far. It’s a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine rated at 177 PS (175 hp / 130 kW) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque. The transmission is of a seven-speed dual-clutch design, and the fuel economy averages out at 6.4 liters per 100 km in mixed cycle (36.75 miles per U.S. gallon). The Emkoo is also available with a range of more powerful engines, which the GS4 Max may or may not get in the future.

According to rumors, prices may start from as low as 100,000 Yuan. For their money, buyers will be getting power seats, full climate control, panoramic roof, an advanced multimedia system with voice command support, and a Level 2 self-driving system.
