Honda puts Civic Type R preorders temporarily on halt in Japan

The Japanese automaker officially announced on its website that it was stopping taking orders for the Civic Type R. The company blamed the ongoing semiconductor shortages for the delay in production.

Rather than taking more orders, the automaker decided to focus on delivering cars against the ones already received. It is official that the pause may last more than a year unless the situation improves in the chipmaking industry. The standard Civic model is likewise on a year-long backorder in Japan right now, but Honda is still taking new orders.

In a detailed comment, the company mentioned logistic difficulties and the Covid-induced, industry-wide microchip deficit. It never gave so much as a hint as to when the Type R might become available again, saying it depended on the future events.

Carscoops points out that the hot hatch became wildly popular in a number of countries following its debut: for example, the whole annual production run planned for Australia was sold out in a single day. Further complicating the situation is the fact that the international Civic Type R version is being produced at a single location worldwide – the Saitama factory in Japan. On its domestic market, the five-door car costs just under five million Yen (roughly 39,000 USD).
