Old, high-mileage Hyundai Getz gets crashed against a wall with unexpected results

German company Dekra decided to find out how safe an elderly Hyundai Getz with 270,000 kilometers (167,770 miles) under its belt would be in a full-on collision. The outcome was quite unexpected.

Deciding against the standard Euro NCAP procedure, the test crew accelerated the car and hit it against a solid immovable obstacle at 50 km/h (31 miles per hour). Events unfolded fast afterwards.

Belt tensioners sprung into action mere 17 milliseconds from the impact, and airbag covers popped open straight afterwards. The full reaction time of the safety system clocked in at 37.9 milliseconds. To put things into perspective, it takes you nearly three times as long to blink.

As for the car body, while it deformed in the collision, the doors still opened without a problem, and the a-pillars and pedals remained intact.
