Infiniti QX80 previewed with what could only be the GT-R engine

Infiniti has shared its own handful of teases for the upcoming SEMA show. Both pics show a special edition of the QX80 SUV powered with a “legend” of an engine. Does it sound like the VR38DETT to you? Because that’s what it sounds like to us.

If words alone do not convince you, have a look at the badge. See the “R-spec” lettering on the tailgate? It closely mimics that of the iconic GT-R series.

Of course, all technical details will have to wait until the planned announcement on October 27. We wouldn’t be surprised to see the famous six-banger boosted to 700 PS (690 hp / 515 kW) for the QX80 R-spec. A new exhaust, lowered suspension and stronger brakes are also high up our list of expectations.

Back in August, the company showed us the QX80 Track Spec (see video). That special edition had a revised exterior and a 3.5-liter V6 boosted to 650 PS (641 hp / 478 kW), while the peak torque went over 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft). It’s quite likely that the new R-spec is based on the Track Spec.
