Revived Land Rover Freelander spotted roaming around in China

Land Rover plans on reviving the Freelander nameplate in China, and the first test vehicle looking like it could be the new Freelander has now been sighted near the company’s local HQ.

CarNewsChina, which posted these spy photos, claims that the SUV looks nothing like the original Freelander. This isn’t surprising, because it is ultimately envisioned as a completely new vehicle sub-brand jointly run by Jaguar Land Rover and Chery.
With a sloping front end and a bulky, boxy body, the newcomer actually resembles the latest Range Rover Sport more than anything. It also sports a large rear spoiler and has some kind of measuring equipment installed in the cabin.

The photographer who snapped these pics claims the SUV had short overhangs, quite a lot of wheelbase and over five meters (16.4 feet) of total body length, putting it into full-size territory. In all likelihood, it is based on Chery’s E0X platform that only supports fully electric and hybrid powertrains. As such, the new Freelander will likely end up being much larger than its predecessor (see video) and partly electrified to boot.

The JLR-Chery joint enterprise plans to wrap up the production of the current model lineup by 2026, so that’s when it may reach the assembly line. It’s still unclear whether the new Freelander lineup will remain China-only; the company has yet to announce its plans.
