Mahindra Scorpio goes next-gen after two decades

The Mahindra Scorpio SUV has been around for 20 years, and the company finally felt it was ready for a new generation now, which gets the ‘N’ suffix to its name.

The car is all new and shares zero parts with its predecessor – or so the manufacturer claims. It is now noticeably larger than before and rides on 17- and 18-inch wheels. The top spec makes use of LED lighting all around and amplitude-dependent shocks. New rotor brakes came to replace the old drum brakes, and while the base spec is RWD, you can pay a premium and get AWD. Further useful options include drive mode selection and ESP.

For powertrains, customers get three options. One is a 2.0L TFSI rated at 203 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft) of torque. Opting for automatic transmission instead of manual bumps up the peak torque to 380 Nm (280 lb-ft).

Another option is a 2.2L TDI capable of 132 PS (130 hp / 97 kW) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque. The third and final option is the same diesel unit boosted higher to 175 PS (173 hp / 129 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft).

By default., the SUV now ships with three seat rows, an AC and an 8-inch infotainment system screen. You can order the second seat row replaced with two captain’s seats, go for panoramic sunroof, HVAC, premium audio and other such niceties.

Prices in India start at the equivalent of $15,000 USD.
