The current generation of the gas-powered Maserati Grecale has taken enough flak for its “cute” 2.0-liter four-cylinder for the company to ditch that engine in favor of a proper twin-turbo V6. Prices for this new version will still start from U.S. $84,500.
In case you forgot, the old four-pot was only good for 304 PS (300 hp / 221 kW) in the base spec and 335 PS (330 hp / 246 kW) in the top spec. In comparison, the new mill is capable of 395 PS (390 hp / 291 kW) in base and goes up to a healthy 537 PS (530 hp / 395 kW) in the Trofeo version.
This may sound like a major upgrade, but Maserati claims the SUV still takes 5.3 seconds to go from zero to 96.6 km/h (0-60 mph). On the upside, it can now hit 257 km/h (160 mph) in a straight line, up from 240 km/h (149 mph).
Those in the market for an all-electric Grecale Folgore will still be able to buy it next year – it’s not going away, not for now, at least. And while the company doesn’t say so outright, it seems likely that the new Grecale V6 will later debut in markets outside of North America.
