Rumor: Mercedes-Benz to clamp down on body style variety

According to Car&Driver citing sources inside of Mercedes-Benz, the company plans to leave only 14 car body types around out of the current 33. Wagons and four-door coupes will be the first to go.

we are told that the CLS (see video) is set to leave production for good in 2024, followed by the AMG GT liftback in the next year. The recently facelifted CLA lineup may get a new generation in 2025, but it will be the last one. Finally, the company plans to ditch some of its station wagons and shooting brakes in the late 2020s, the source claims.

SUVs might also be affected. Among other things, the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe may get the axe as soon as the production of their next generations ends. Allegedly, the company argues that there is little need to keep up a wide variety of body styles around when certain types are only popular in a few markets, especially those with steadily falling demand.

At the same time, the Stuttgart HQ plans to diversify its portfolio thanks to new EVs. Insiders say that, aside from the electric G-Class, Mercedes-Benz considers developing an all-electric AMG GT Coupe and a special SL-Class spin-off. More Maybach models will be added and a new ultra-deluxe badge dubbed Mythos will be properly introduced. The Mythos lineup will allegedly include a speedster powered by the SL engine options and a coupe envisioned as a reincarnation of the legendary 300 SL.
