Mercedes-Benz GLC lands in China with more legroom, less thrust

Mercedes-Benz has brought a Chinese version of its recently introduced GLC electric crossover to the ongoing Auto China expo. The “L” version is considerably larger than its European counterpart seen in the video above, but misses out on 67 horsepower (49 kilowatts) compared to it.

Specifically, it comes in at 4,949 x 1,970 x 1,710 millimeters large with 3,027 millimeters between the axles. As such, the Chinese GLC is 104 mm (4.1 inches) longer than its European cousin with 55 mm (2.2 inches) of extra wheelbase. Exterior changes seem to be minimal and largely constrained to the front bumper.

In terms of equipment, the local GLC offers adaptive air suspension similar to that of the S-Class, a giant infotainment display called Hyperscreen and an AI-powered voice assistant named Xiao Ben, designed from the ground up to suit the tastes of the local audience.

Propulsion is still handled by two e-motors, but their combined output falls short of the EU version’s 489 PS (482 hp / 360 kW). Instead, the Chinese GLC gets 421 PS (415 hp / 310 kW). The company claims that its range lies above 700 kilometers (435 miles) per charge, but we suspect that the numbers are being quoted according to China’s rather lax measurement standard. At any rate, replenishing the charge from 10 to 80 percent is a matter of 22 minutes, so it’s unlikely to become an issue for most drivers.

The launch date of the new Mercedes-Benz GLC L is still pending, and there has been no mention of the price.
