Elderly Mercedes 500 E springs to life with a 700-PS V12

Lesser-known German tuning firm Stern Garage has caught us by surprise with its awesome-looking Mercedes 500 E (W124) restomod. Everything in the project, from the exterior and cabin to the suspension and drivetrain, has been overhauled.

As you may remember, the W124 E-Class came to us in the 1990s equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 good for 326 PS (322 hp / 240 kW). It sprinted 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 6.1 seconds, which was actually decent by the standards of the time.

Needless to say, it pales in comparison to the restomod’s 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 mill sourced from a W222 S-Class (S 65, to be specific). Even in stock form, this engine delivered a healthy 630 PS (621 hp / 463 kW) along with 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque. Tuned, it makes more than 700 PS (690 hp / 515 kW).

This becomes possible thanks to new oil coolers installed alongside an intercooler, as well as a completely redesigned exhaust system and other performance components. The body, the suspension and the brakes have been reworked as well to account for the added weight, and handmade carbon-fiber aero topped things off.

The interior ended up with Recaro Classic seats trimmed with leather and Alcantara, illuminated running boards saying “V12-Biturbo” and new instruments. As you can notice, the speedometer maxes out at 400 km/h (248 mph).
