MG4 EV teases interior before launch

SAIC Group, the Chinese automotive concern that owns the formerly British brand MG, has revealed the cabin of the next-generation MG4 EV. It looks clean and minimal and houses new Rose Purple seats alongside an infotainment system designed by smartphone maker Oppo. The premiere will take place on Tuesday, August 5, but most of the details are already here.

A digital instrument cluster shares the dashboard with a 15.6-inch central display. Physical buttons are barely present. The seats have been redesigned with enhanced lumbar support and integrated headrests. The rear bench seat received a bigger 522mm (20.4-inch) back reclined by 27 degrees. A sun hatch with an integrated anti-glare visor comes optional. For the trim, buyers can choose between the aforementioned Rose Purple and an ashen-light-blue tint known as Mountain Blue.

The Oppo infotainment system runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chipset and supports full smartphone integration. It is billed as “smart” and allows people in the car to access some features straight from their phones. The driver can also use gestures to issue navigation commands. A 50W fast phone charger situated on the console has active cooling built in for efficiency.

The electric vehicle is 4,395 mm (171.7 inches) long, 1,842 mm (72 inches) wide and 1,551 mm (60.6 inches) tall with 2,750 mm (107.4 inches) of wheelbase. In earlier news, SAIC Group announced an intention to use QingTao Energy batteries for its EVs. Each pack stores 70 kWh of electricity and only has 5% of liquid electrolyte, while the rest is solid-state. This results in an impressively high energy storage density of 180 Watt-hours per kilogram of mass. The range of the MG4 EV is manufacturer-estimated at 537 km (333 miles).
