Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV announced with 87 km / 54 mi EV range

The newly announced PHEV is the fourth Mitsubishi Outlander car to debut this year after the standard one shown in February, a facelifted old-gen hybrid that followed a few weeks later, and a next-gen standard SUV shown a few weeks ago. Let’s see what it will be all about.

Mitsubishi still refrains from disclosing specifics such as power and torque, but it claims that the part-electric off-roader offers 87 kilometers (54 miles) of battery range. It comes equipped with a petrol engine and dual electric motors mounted one per axle, powered by a 20-kWh traction battery. The company claims it succeeded in improving the performance of both motors “by around 40 percent” without specifying whether it means horsepower, electric efficiency or something else.

The all-wheel-drive configuration now benefits from a new feature called Active Yaw Control (AYC), which can direct the torque to the front or the rear axle exclusively. It can also brake left or right wheels individually for torque vectoring and even shift the horsepower balance in favor of one or the other electric motor as needed.

Interestingly, the internal combustion engine stays unmentioned in this announcement. The only guess we have is that it is still the old 2.4-liter four-cylinder rated at 128 PS (124 hp / 94 kW). With the electric motors and drivetrain improved, we expect the system performance to be a major step forward compared to the previous generation.

In the United States, the 2023 Outlander PHEV will go on sale in the second half of 2022, and all prices and trim levels should be revealed closer to that date.
