New Volkswagen ID. Polo lands with improved looks, equipment and tech

After a long series of teasers, Volkswagen has finally unveiled the next ID.Polo hatchback in its full glory. Formerly known as the ID.2 but renamed for our convenience, it’s now coming to the market with three trim levels to choose from and three electric powertrains. The launch edition starts from €33,800 in Germany, but a cheaper €25,000 version is coming this summer.

On the exterior side of things, the newcomer strongly resembles the ID.2all Concept from three years ago. It features a fairly traditional body shape with short overhangs all around, a slanted hood line and cleanly designed, modern LED lights at both ends. The VW badges light up in the top spec, and there are multiple air intakes in the lower bumper – never mind that there is no engine under the hood.

Compared to the ICE Polo, the new EV is marginally smaller at 4,053 x 1,816 x 1,530 millimeters (159.6 x 71.5 x 60.2 inches). At the same time, its wheelbase is somewhat larger at 2.6 meters (102.4 inches). The trunk starts at 441 liters (15.57 cubic feet) and goes to 1,240 liters (43.79 cubic feet) with the rear bench seat folded.

If you’ve seen the latest Volkswagen releases, you’ll know that the interior brings back physical buttons for accessing most in-car functions without taking your eyes off the road. Aside from that, the ID.Polo comes equipped with a 10.25-inch digital dashboard and a 13-inch infotainment system screen. The top trim adds LED Matrix headlights to the list along with a two-zone climate control system and a heated steering wheel rim. 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio, panoramic glass roof and massage seats are listed under options.

There are three electric motors to choose from, rated at 116, 135 and 211 metric horsepower. This corresponds to 114, 133 and 208 U.S. hp or 85, 100, and 155 kilowatts, respectively. All three variants are front-wheel-drive by design with no option for AWD. Battery sizes reach 52 kWh in the top spec, but all range numbers remain to be revealed.
