Porsche Cross Turismo scores 10M km on virtual North Loop circuit

A virtual prototype of the battery-powered Porsche Cross Turismo supercar has done nearly 10,000,000 kilometers (6,215,000 miles) on a 3D map of the famed Nürburgring North Loop.

Commenting on the news, Porsche said software simulation enabled the company to develop new cars faster by studying the properties of their individual units and components without the need to build real-life prototypes.

Porsche had been testing its virtual Porsche Cross Turismo for seven months before it built the first production sample. The 3D car had been traversing great distances, and all the while the engineers had been trying to determine the optimal power consumption scheme required to finish the entire North Loop in under eight minutes.

Once it comes out, the Porsche Cross Turismo will ship with two electric motors together capable of 600 hp (447 kW). The engine assembly will draw its power from an 800V battery, offering around 500 km (310 mi) in terms of driving range. It will also accelerate the car 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in mere 3.5 seconds.

The premiere date remains unannounced, but rumors persist that it may happen sometime in 2020.
