GR Supra Super GT Concept to debut in January

As you probably have heard, Toyota will introduce the next generation of its Supra sports car series at the Detroit Motor Show in January. As it turns out, this won’t be the only major premiere for the Japanese car manufacturer in the beginning of the next year. The company will also debut the sports car concept called “GR Supra Super GT” at the Tokyo Tuning Show on January 11, 2019.

The vehicle has been designed by Gazoo Racing. Its name implies that it could be a prototype of Toyota’s Super GT Championship racecar. Don’t be mislead by the name “Supra”: cars that participate in this racing series generally have little in common with their street-legal counterparts.

Toyota had previously shown us Supra-based racecars built specifically for the NASCAR and VLN races. The VLN build came particularly close to the street version. The GR Supra Super GT, on the contrary, may have very little left in it from the street-legal vehicle.

The next-gen Supra showed up at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed clad in test mule camouflage. There’s not much information available on it right now. What we do know is that it is going to ship with a choice between two engines, a 3.0L V6 and a 2.0L V4, both connected to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Sales should begin in the first half of 2019.
