Ford begins testing the Explorer police car

Judging by the recently made spy photos, car manufacturer Ford is currently busy testing the new dedicated police vehicle series based on the latest Explorer SUV chassis. The car should enter retail before spring 2019.

The Ford Police Interceptor series sports revised lighting, new radiator grille design, additional body protection and rooftop lights. It also comes equipped with a blind spot monitor and an improved brake system.

The cars will ship with a choice between a 3.0L gasoline engine, its larger 3.3L counterpart, and a hybrid drivetrain comprised of the same 3.3L V6 and an electric motor. Their respective specs are still being kept secret, though.

The “civilian” Ford Explorer SUV should celebrate its international premiere at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show. The car is built the CD6 chassis and will ship with an engine palette that includes a 2.3L turbo V4 (284 hp / 212 kW), a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 (400 hp / 298 kW) and a hi-end 3.3L engine (performance data pending).
