Ford unveils the next-gen Explorer police car

Car manufacturer Ford has tken the wraps off the next generation of its Explorer police car series. The SUV now packs a hybrid drivetrain and a 270-degree perimeter monitoring system, among other features.

According to the manufacturer, the car can now withstand rear collisions originating from vehicles moving at 75 mph (120 km/h), as opposed to the standard 50 mph (80 km/h). This has become possible thanks to extensive structural reinforcement, use of boron steel and introduction of a special interior layout.

The next-gen Explorer police car also boasts tuned brakes, improved engine cooling and classical steel wheels that can withstand repeated collisions with curbs or rails without breaking. It can also cross water obstacles up to 20 inches (50 cm) high.

The car will ship with a choice between a 3.0L turbo V6 and a hybrid drivetrain focused on a 3.3L gasoline engine. Both utilize the same make of 10-speed automatic transmission.

Other notable features of the 4WD police vehicle include the Ford telemetry system and the Police Perimeter Alert system that can detect potential dangers, automatically lock doors and set off the alarm when necessary.
