Fiat reveals future plans, trims down range

Fiat CEO has released an official statement regarding the Italian car manufacturer’s new development strategy. Apparently, the model range will be completely overhauled.

In particular, Fiat is no longer interested in producing ‘large, premium vehicles and sport cars’. This means there will be no new Fiat 124 Spider based on the Mazda MX-5 platform. The Fiat Punto, which was discontinued last year, will also likely go without leaving an heir.

The Fiat 500 will become the focus of attention in the new lineup. For the first time in the 500 series, a five-door version will appear packing narrow doors that open against the traffic (‘suicide doors’). A normal estate/wagon will come to replace the Fiat 500L MPV, and the next-gen 500X will follow later as well.

The new Fiat Panda will emerge in 2021, followed by a new model based on its chassis and tech two years later. The Panda will be closely based on the Fiat Centoventi Concept demonstrated at the latest Geneva show (see video). A new C-class crossover/SUV, around 4.5 meters (14.75 feet) long, will arrive as a replacement for the Fiat Tipo.
