Mercedes sheds some light on the 2020 E-Class facelift

The current generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been around for four long years now, and the manufacturer is working on a facelift scheduled for Europe launch in June.

Just as the first spy photos showing three camouflaged E-Class saloons on a Las-Vegas stroll emerged online, the German automaker decided to reveal some technical specs of the upcoming update. Let us have a better look at these.

Mercedes claims that the E-Class is its single most popular model, which necessitates serious facelift planning. As such, the 2020 update will not introduce any substantial visual changes, but it will bring along new tech and features. The new safety aids will trigger in advance: for instance, Active Distance Assist will automatically drop speed upon detecting a traffic jam ahead. Active Brake Assist will apply the brake as soon as it senses that the car is on a collision course, rather than warning the driver and waiting. The blind zone monitor will warn the driver about approaching vehicles when the door is open, the 360-degree camera view system will get several improvements, and the air quality sensor will be tuned for finer detection.

As far as the equipment is concerned, the facelift will bring along a new steering wheel with sensor controls. The next-gen MBUX infotainment system with voice support and Augmented Reality features will be available in all trim versions, including the most basic one. The Energizing Assist, so far only available in select Mercedes cars, will also make it into the list for the E-Class along with numerous other features.

The 2020 E-Class will ship with a choice between the M254 2.0 I4 turbocharged to deliver 270 hp (209 kW) and the 3.0 I6 rated at 365 hp (272 kW). Both will take advantage of the familiar mild-hybrid add-on called the EQ Boost. All in all, the update will expand the hybrid range to seven models.

The sedan/saloon variant of the E-Class will be revealed simultaneously with the estate/wagon variant. Coupe, convertible and LWB sedan versions will debut later targeting the market in China.
