Owner of the world’s most expensive Ford Mustang says he will not restore it

A unique 1968 Ford Mustang that starred in the Bullitt movie of the same year went up on sale last month – and fetched U.S. $3,740,000, making it the most precious Mustang ever.

The muscle car used to belong to Kiernan family before the transaction, who decided to purchase it when they saw it advertised in a newspaper back in 1974. The car has seen much use throughout the years, and looked rather worn and battered when it appeared at the auction.

However, according to Sean Kiernan, the new owner of the vehicle told him he did not intend to restore the car, preferring instead to let it keep all the scars and bruises it received during the filming of one of the most spectacular chase scenes in cinematic history. He added that he would like to keep his identity anonymous.

The Bullitt filming set had two Mustangs like this. This particular copy was driven by Steve McQueen and often filmed close-up. The other car was used exclusively for stunts – and was found rotting in a junkyard three years ago. It is currently undergoing complete restoration, and its owner hopes that it would someday set a new sale record.
