Hot Temper: Porsche Taycan EV burns down in garage

Cars spontaneously combusting has been a problem as long as the industry has existed, but as time went by, manufacturers have succeeded in identifying and eliminating most risk factors for gas-powered vehicles. EVs are still new, though, and therefore a problem.

Following a long streak of news about Tesla battery cars catching fire on their own under various circumstances and in various corners of the world, this Porsche Taycan felt like taking up the torch (sorry). The saloon was sitting in its garage in Florida, USA, when it suddenly exploded and burned down to the hull, taking much of the garage with it.

It remains uncertain whether the EV was plugged into a power socket when this occurred. The police and Porsche representatives are investigating the case, and while the U.S. Department of Transportation replied that it had nothing to comment on the incident yet, a recall campaign might be announced after a few more cases.

Potential Taycan buyers have already reacted to the incident with hundreds of Internet comments, saying they won’t hurry to purchase the car until the reasons behind the incidents are clearly established.

Porsche has sold 130 Taycans in the USA since the launch in December 2019.
