Kia & Hyundai announce an intelligent, fully automatic gearshift design
The South Korean automaker duo has presented what looks like a breakthrough in gear shifting. Meet the ICT Connected Shift System, the first truly automatic gearbox.
The electronic system analyzes the road situation and shifts gears accordingly – it is as simple as that, the companies claim. Of course, the situation isn’t nearly as simple under the hood.
The complex AI-based system uses real-time data gained from multiple cameras, navigation maps, and the so-called ‘intelligent cruise control radar’ to make decisions. For instance, if the car is going to be coasting for a while, and the transports ahead moves with the same speed, the AI naturally decides to slip into neutral.
The companies are determined to continue developing and improving their innovative tech to the point when it becomes ready for installation on mass-produced car models.
