Hyundai announces a new i20-based mini-SUV due out in Europe in 2020

The South Korean automotive company is getting another crossover SUV ready to rumble on the i20 chassis – but stresses that it won’t be as tame as the previous-gen i20 Active.

The i20 Active, which you can see on the video, is essentially a simple hatchback with some extra ride height and a plastic kit slapped on. The newcomer, Hyundai claims, follows the design philosophy of the Kia XCeed and boasts an all-new body.

A glance at the spy photos reveals that much of the i20 is still there, especially at the front end. The rear bumper and taillights are new, though.

The interior is partly hidden behind some mesh, but one can still discern the i20 dashboard, infotainment and climate control.

The model targets Europe as its primary market and comes powered by a fuel-efficient 1.0-liter T-GDI diesel rated at 100-120 hp (75-90 kW), assisted by an electric starter. Six-speed manual and DCT will be available for transmission, and the drive will stay on the front axle.

The launch should occur later this year.
